Kensington Lighthouse
An Inner City Sanctuary with white cypress beams
Timber Specifications
Glulam: GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood
The Kensington Lighthouse located in the inner-city region of Melbourne has been built on top of a 160m2 strip of land. Its narrow lot proved a difficult challenge for two architects; however, they were able to smartly design a home made of lightweight metals and timber.
Vicbeam supplied GL10 White Cypress timber beams to this project that has receive outstanding reviews and have won the IDEA Awards Best Residential Interior in 2009. Such reviews include the Architonic, Architectural Review Australia, The Age, The New York Times, The international Herald Tribune and Dezeen.
A hauntingly unique home that is visually stimulating in its use of timber texture and its tangential approach of architecture. Two buildings, or otherwise known as ‘Sun Shells’ were created to capture and reflect light from the windows to the interior spaces of the building.
Outside, a small courtyard with stairs connects the ‘Sun Shells’ together as they are positioned at different heights, creating privacy while maintaining adjacency.
Inside, timber texture can be seen in a variety of forms of cladding, posts and beams. This use of timber texture is continued onto the furniture, stair treads and doors where natural light enters and provides warmth to the home.
A two-bedroom house that combines brilliant styling and smart spacious interiors.
