Mildura Deakin Trade Training Centre

The Mildura Education centre has grown in a super learning complex

A Senior Secondary College in Mildura now contains state-of-the-art facilities for its students and staff members. The Deakin Trade Training Centre’s aim is to improve on student retention and outcomes by creating an engaging environment with a visually appealing centre that is functional and flexible enough for practical learning.

Vicbeam supplied GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood prefabricated to make stunning portal structures for the internal corridors. Assembled on-site, these portals contrasts from the white walls magnificently and sit unified through the central gallery of the building. Light-filled and spacious, the gallery has timber texture that are complimented with an array of acoustic elements above. Together, they form a spacious environment that overcomes learning obstacles with smart accessibility.

Architects and Builders have referenced a Shearers Shed as inspiration for the look and feel of this new centre, sticking to a traditional industrial layout for the interiors. However, from the outside view the building holds a geometric shape with a display of bold colours that oozes contemporary design. Abstract shapes and patterns are filled with green and purple colours with a hint orange timber texture seen on the Pergola. A great example of combining traditional industrial elements of a Shearers Shed with modern contemporary design structures.

An external GLT Pergola sits beside the large building and is small in comparison. However, it’s timber texture glows of orange that makes the structure appear to be a feature more than a structural element. The pergola is made of H3 treated GL13 Radiata Pine that have been cut to length and drilled with holes before installed on-site with timber purlins.

Mixing traditional layout with contemporary design has produced a positive outcome for this project, which is a great example of using smart design to overcome learning obstacles. As a result, Mildura now has a state-of-the-art learning facility built to challenge, engage and inspire students.
