Newhaven College – Admin building
Framed in Glulam
The new campus of Newhaven College 2015, in Philip Island (Vic) was our second project on this site, over a three-year span. This building houses the administration and library areas used extensively day to day by staff and students. To have a strong natural look and feel was important to Newhaven to make sure the buildings were welcoming to facilitate regular heavy foot traffic.
In the library, the portals provide an open space for children to gather in classes or to quietly read. The portals are designed in such a way that they allow plenty of natural light in through the windows.
The architect McIldowie Partners defined the use and look of the project to achieve a look and feel that is light and airy inside and strong and aesthetically pleasing externally. We provided over 50 beams for this project of GL13 Radiata Pine Glulam for external and internal use. The impressive beams are 600mm on the vertical and bolted to create 220mm wide columns. Some beams were pre-treated for H3 rating, which is a hazard level use for outdoor use above ground with a long-term guarantee as a result.
The project had a tight turnaround time as the beams were provided within three weeks of order, delivered to site ready to use.
The builder won an MBA award for this building; we are proud to assist DAS Constructions in fulfilling a vision resulting in children feeling comfortable to learn in a naturally enhanced environment. Having worked with Newhaven College before, it was our pleasure to see another glulam project come to fruition to the satisfaction of all parties.
