RMIT Garden Building

Glue Laminated Timber for a sustainable future

Timber Specifications

  • Glulam: GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood
  • Columns: 450 x 450mm GL18
  • Rafters: 600 x 135mm GL18

This is a true mass timber project that signifies the grandeur of timber architecture for a sustainable building. Vicbeam was responsible for supplying GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood glulam beams for this project associated with New Academic Street (NAS) and RMIT University. The project required a collaboration of Melbourne’s top architectural companies to create a four-storey building designed for open social spaces, enhance the urban environment and focus on climate change in the CBD.

Vicbeam are proud to be part of this unique project that pushes the boundaries of sustainable building within an urban environment. The Garden building boasts four levels and a roof terrace that features colourful planting varieties and ‘small edible plants’ running through all levels. It’s designed to be used all year round with each level of balconies situated in different directions in respondent to light and view, showcasing environmental sustainability at its best.

Behind all the cutting-edge eco-design features, the building is structurally supported with large sized GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) beams both inside and out. All the beams were pre-fabricated offsite by the skilful team at Timber Imagineering before assembled on-site. The inspirational building signifies the right direction for the commercial building industry and timber industry with GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) becoming a prominent sustainable material in the future.

RMIT and New Academic Street (NAS) presents a case study video of the new Garden Building located at RMIT University, city campus.
