Connection, continuity and sustainability was the brief for this family home, designed by joining living areas together with timber columns, rafters and glazing that superbly features indoors and outdoors from every angle of the home.

Each frame is integrated with joinery creating continuity between the open plan home and outdoor living spaces. The timber texture is continued with the home’s practical features, seemingly connecting through the shelves, kitchen benchtop and table. To maximise sustainability and keeping carbon footprint to a minimum was the priority, as the architects selected materials that were ‘eco-certified, low maintenance, textural, durable and with thermal mass’ (Yalcinkaya. G, 2017).

Vicbeam manufactured straight GL18 Vic Ash H3 Hardwood that was cut to size, coated and pre-fabricated to be delivered on-site. To assure a structurally sound material, all hardwood timber was treated with H3 to provide timber longevity and protect it from decay and termites. This will ensure that any exposed timber will endure the ever-changing weather for years to come. To add an industrial tone and mood to the home, M12 Stainless Barrel nuts was used for the connections of rafters and columns.

These exposed columns and rafters provide structure to the new extension and becomes part of a decorative feature to this stunning 90’s home, re-developed with modern architecture. Polished concrete flooring, timber beams and wood ceiling panels create an industrial tone to this home made to nurture a growing family and accompany loved ones (McDougal. E, 2017).
