Complex Walkway Structure — Nitens GLT & Solid Spotted Gum
The Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service project presented a unique fabrication challenge, incorporating a long architectural Walkway with a continuously changing roof pitch.
Designed by Constructive Dialogue Architects, the project forms part of the expansion of the Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service in NSW, creating welcoming and shaded outdoor areas suited to the region’s challenging climate and remote location.
Simplifying Complex Geometry
The changing roof pitch created a series of complex junctions between the rafters and supporting beams. The conventional approach would have required individually notching each rafter, resulting in numerous unique components and significantly increasing drawing and fabrication complexity.
Vicbeam developed a more efficient solution by transferring the required notching into the supporting beams, allowing the rafters to remain simpler and more consistent.
This approach reduced the number of individually detailed components, simplified CNC fabrication and drawings, and saved valuable workshop time, while maintaining the architect’s intended roof geometry.
Nitens GLT & Solid Spotted Gum
The structure combines 240 x 90 mm and 210 x 70 mm Nitens GLT and solid F27 Spotted Gum, providing the structural performance and natural timber character required for this prominent exposed structure.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful timber fabrication can simplify complex architectural geometry, reduce fabrication time and deliver a commercially practical result without compromising the architectural intent.
