The Green Room

A Fantastic display of mixed timber species and nature

Timber Specifications
Glulam: GL18 Mixed Species Hardwood
Rafters: 300x65mm GL18

A combination of timber and nature comes to mind for this bespoke unit designed to sit separate from the home and accompany a garden backyard. Vicbeam supplied GL18 Mixed Species hardwood prefabricated and cut to size to form rafters for a garage and a backyard unit. The result is a fantastic structure that not only glorifies a variety of timber species but displays a unique feature that makes this build project a standout.

Timber texture are continued to both the double garage and the unit with superb demonstrations of GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) rafters made of Silvertop Ash, Messmate, Grey Gum and Vic Ash Hardwoods. Unified, these exposed rafters feature prominently in the double garage and to the backyard unit, where we see more timber texture assembled for structural support and with purpose.

From the outside, the exposed rafters provide vital structural support but also wonderfully complements the Spotted Gum cladding that continues around towards a connected timber shed. Intentionally lowered, the timber shed allows access to the roof where a growth of plants prevails and has taken the natural process of propagating. A one-of-kind feature which really impressed us upon closer inspection.

Having nature literally planted on-top of a roof is a unique feature that Owner, David McMillan has purposely made; introducing a smart and sustainable alternative to the common roofing structures we see today, particularly in residential building. To add to this sustainably green approach, David has also pre-installed structural equipment ready for future solar panels. An excellent idea with the right approach to sustainable living.

Timber is continued inside where the unit has two living rooms, a separate powder room and a single bathroom that combines ensuite styling with superb timber finishes seen in the timber flooring, cladding, GLT purlins, and rafters. Once prefabricated and assembled, all members provide a sense of warmth when natural sunlight shines through and takes advantage of the internal windows.

An inspirational project that is heading in the right direction for sustainable design and living. Vicbeam is proud to have been involved in this project that is sure to capture attention with the superb use of timber varieties in its different forms. Combine the timber with a roof top garden and you have a one-of-kind unit that is sure to impress any builder and timber enthusiast.
