A new learning classroom (STEAM) and garden at St Dominic’s Primary School has been developed to support teachers and students at Broadmeadows Primary School. Focused on developing and teaching students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, this innovative program called STEAM encourages students to become creative problem solvers, think independently and leaders.
In support of this innovative approach to learning, Vicbeam is proud to have manufactured three bolted roof trusses, spanning over 10 metres in length, 1.8 metres in height and coated with Haymes UVEX Timber Finish – Light Oak to give each truss a natural timber appearance. The exposed trusses look amazing from the outside, demanding attention as you walk towards the building.
Inside, the doors can be completely opened wide bringing in a dash of air and natural sunlight during recess. Without disturbing the natural light and space, clear glazed windows have been custom made to be installed in between the bottom and top chords of the front truss member.
The large trusses were assembled in-house and delivered to site. The trusses were made of GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood and bolted together using black powdered steel plates, a modern feature that is visually appealing against GLT (glue laminated timber).
For this project, Vicbeams’ fabrication team were required to cut to length, drill holes and assemble all three trusses in-house. The result was astounding, and our clients couldn’t be any happier with their new STEAM centre.
