Vicbeam supplied prefabricated GL17 Slash Pine H3 Glulam beams to be delivered to a Catholic High school’s new learning centre in NSW. The multi-million-dollar upgrade and re-development comes with ten rooms and a large outdoor and indoor learning area. In addition, a new sports area equipped with basketball courts were also constructed for student’s sport and recreational activities.
The St Clare’s new portals are a great example of utilising steel and timber materials together. For each portal, a steel column is bolted between two timber columns and a rafter. Assembled, the timbers hide the steel column and surface from sight but ensures a strong connection of both materials for a single portal.
Designed to look fresh and modern, the building invites natural light with its large windows and open space areas. Internally, eight GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) portals; some with steel framed glazes sit neatly and unified. The portals texture delivers a beautiful natural timber characteristic that frames the buildings internal concrete walls and steel fixings.
One coat of Bona Mega was applied to the GLT (Glue Laminated Timbers) rafters and columns. Vicbeam’s pre-fabrication included cutting to length the members, and drilling and countersinking holes ready to be assembled on-site. Countersinking allowed M20 Galvanised bolts to be screwed flushed to the timber, providing a clean finish to each connection of columns and rafters.
Vicbeam is proud to be part of St Clare’s high school re-development project that unifies concrete, steel and timber materials outstandingly. As a result, the new education centre inspires learning for students; with its open space areas accompanied with natural light and GLT (Glue Laminated timber) portals.
