A brand-new Aquatic centre in NSW is built for the RLS, leaders in water safety, swimming, and lifesaving education across Australia. An award-winning project from Master Builders Australia, the new recreational centre boasts a state-of-the-art pool with treated glulam timbers exposed inside and outside.
Vicbeam was approached by Decode Group to manufacture and fabricate glulam timbers to be installed as half portals above the indoor pool and to feature outside the centre, displaying its well-coated texture to the building and its façade. We also provided glulam purlins to be installed in-between each rafter beam.
In collaboration with RLS and Trevor Hall Architects, Vicbeam fabricated each glulam member with drilled holes and slots for internal steel plate connections. These connections can be seen on the exterior columns where the rafters span from the inside and connected outside.
Additionally, each of the glulam members were H3 treated, an important inclusion for this project that makes the glulam durable and for better performance in both weather and internal pool conditions. For extra protection, additional coating with Cutek Goldtone was also applied to all members.
The coating also expresses a strong timber texture that contrasts from other build materials, making the glulam timber stick out as an eye-catching feature to the facade. Inside, the rafters and purlins display the same texture and adds vital support to the buildings structure.
Another great example of the growing use of glulam in recreational centres, where treatment and coating are important factors to this project.
