Orygen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, is the world’s leading research and knowledge translation organisation focusing on mental ill-health in young people. Vicbeam is proud to be involved in the re-development of Orygen & OYH Precinct by providing GL13 Untreated Radiata Pine and supporting Kane Constructions in this $50 million project.
This huge project featured untreated pine glulam beams bolted together inside the building precinct. Upon entrance, Glue laminated beams dominate the view with different sizes and tree-like timber structures. With an expansive deck, a range of indoor/outdoor settings fitted with GLT (Glue laminated timber), the new Orygen & OYH Centre promotes a welcoming and flexible environment for all.
A report by Planet Ark suggests that utilising exposed timber in buildings create similar health benefits to those who spend time in nature (C, Geraldine, Architecture & Design). The report supports Orygen & OYH new re-development health centre and highlights the positive effect from wood products towards lowering blood pressure, reducing stress and anxiety, and improving air quality.
With that in mind, Vicbeam provided GL13 Radiata Pine Beams for all the window facades comprised of mullions and transoms fabricated onto timber curtain walls, which provide a clean finish for glass, aluminium and timber. The undulating walls along the corridor have been cut in such a way as to create a wave pattern down the hallway.
This bespoke project required Vicbeam to prefabricate slotted connections, hand cut and shape over 500 varied members of GLT (Glulam laminated timber). Vicbeam also fabricated and assembled in-house, the 23 ‘tree branches’ that can be seen above the stairs and into the open space, all at precise angles and degrees.
