Once was a Primary School site, now re-developed as a Community Hub that offers multi-functional offices, rooms, and a multipurpose sports stadium. With flexible spaces and surrounding parkland, the new centre will provide opportunities for daily activities and services for the Whitehorse Community.

Vicbeam manufactured Warren trusses and rafters made of GL18 Vic Ash Hardwood beams to be installed inside the multipurpose sports stadium. Four large Warren trusses that spans 23 metres each, delivers commanding views of exposed timber texture coated with Cutek.

An understanding of glulam manufacturing, process and timber engineering was vital in the initial stages of the project.

Initial work drawings provided by Vistek Engineering made the process run smoothly for an otherwise complex and monumental project. These complexities included steel plates and bolts custom made to suit timber beams that were fabricated in different sizes. This includes rafter beams which were perfectly cut to suit the work drawings.

As a result, Vicbeam’s own workshop drawings of timber members and steel plates were designed with minor implications, which resulted in a smooth transition from fabrication to the assembly of trusses. The video below demonstrates work drawings and 3D modelling of Warren Trusses by Vicbeam.

A total of 264 units of bolts were assembled and installed with steel plates, creating a magnificent sight of trusses inside and outside the factory. Due to its long span, each truss had to be split into two assembly parts before connected outside and loaded onto trucks. The video below shows an assembly time-lapse of a single truss.

The successful installation of all trusses is a testament to the management conducted from all parties. Vicbeam consulted with Vistek Engineering, Ireland Brown Constructions and FJMT Architects to ensure the right steps and solutions are taken.

We are delighted to be part of this project, which ran smoothly from start to finish and resulting in some magnificently exposed timber trusses for the Whitehorse Community.

Client Testimonial

Vicbeam collaboratively worked through a complex and at times challenging design process, largely due to the sheer size of the trusses, and delivered an excellent product. I’d highly recommend any architects and builders interested in using Glulam trusses to go straight to Vicbeam.
