Flinders Civic Center

GLT portal frames & circular pinned connections

Product 6 x Portals made from Tasbeam 15 H3 610 x 135 & 610 x 85

The Flinders Civic Hall plays a key role in the Flinders and surrounding communities, and its recent upgrade was long overdue. Thanks to successful funding from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, matched by the local Council, the project was able to move forward.’

The newly renovated facility now includes an elevated stage, an art space, meeting rooms, and versatile community areas that cater to a range of users. A significant addition is the inclusion of a Changing Places facility, which provides an essential service for individuals unable to use standard accessible toilets. The final design is the result of extensive community consultation, including workshops with the Shire, design consultants, and current and future user groups, ensuring the space meets the evolving needs of the community.

4Dimensions approached Vicbeam to manufacture and fabricate six GLT (Glue Laminated Timber) portal frames, which are integral to the striking façade and seamlessly transition throughout the structure. The use of GLT in the portal frames, along with circular stainless-steel pinned connections, is a key feature, offering several benefits in construction, particularly in timber to timber connections.

The building features clean lines and a contemporary aesthetic, emphasizing natural materials, including GLT timber, that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The use of timber elements, large glazing, and expansive windows enhances the sense of openness, allowing for abundant natural light and views of the surrounding area. The structure is thoughtfully designed to be both durable and visually appealing, integrating seamlessly with the local landscape while meeting the practical needs of the community. Additionally, the inclusion of features like the Changing Places facility and flexible community spaces reflects the civic center’s commitment to inclusivity and versatility.

GLT circular pinned connection

The GLT circular pinned connections offer several key benefits, including simplicity and efficiency in design and fabrication, making them cost-effective and easy to install. They improve load distribution by reducing stress concentrations, enhancing overall structural stability. These connections allow flexibility for rotational movement, accommodating the natural expansion and contraction of GLT timber, which helps preserve the structure’s integrity. Additionally, the circular pins provide an aesthetic appeal, adding an architectural feature to the design. They also reduce the risk of joint failure by distributing stresses evenly, preventing damage from excessive loading or material degradation over time.
