Project

The King’s School

New Science Learning Centre

Vicbeam supplied the GL18 H3 Treated Hardwood beams for the King’s school Atrium in their new Science learning centre.

In this project the engineer used a combination of timber and steel to provide structural support for the roof and helicopter. While the beams appear to be the sole structural support, upon close inspection you may notice the architect designed the steel members to be rebated into the timber Glulam for visual effect.

The H3 hardwood beams were coated with a dark stain as per architects specifications.

Overall a wonderful synergy between timber and steel.

The atrium currently houses one of Dick Smith’s helicopters which he donated to the Powerhouse Museum in 1990. Dick Smith was the first person to fly solo around the world in a helicopter in 1982/3.

For more information please visit the Powerhouse Museum blog where you will see photos of the helicopter being installed and a video is also available.
